Borage, also known as starflower, is an annual herb in the flowering plant family Boraginaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region, and has naturalised in many other locales. It’s an annual plant with coarse, hairy leaves. It grows 2 to 3 feet tall and has blue, bluey-pink, or white, star-shaped flowers. The leaves and stems are a grey-green colour.
Adding Borage to a butterfly or bee garden is a great choice as it attracts pollinators including native bees to your space. It also has the added benefits of repelling pests and being companions to plants like tomatoes and strawberries.
Borage is eaten and used as a garnish or in drinks. The seeds are also pressed to make borage seed oil, which is used as a supplement.
Currently we have lots of volunteer seedlings, around 5-10cm, popping up in the garden that we’re happy to pot up and sell!
